Reintegration/Reunification Therapy
What Is Reintegration/Reunification Therapy?
Reunification is undertaken when there has been a prolonged absence or significant relationship disruption between a child or children and a parent. Sometimes reunification is undertaken when a parent-child relationship has been damaged due to unhealthy behaviors by one or both parents. The child typically lives with one parent, (referred to as the primary parent) and the non-primary parent desires to renew his/her relationship with the child.
The primary client is always the child and reintegration/reunification therapy is paced according to the needs and progressive adjustment of the child. A guiding principle is that it is generally in the child’s best interest to have “the best possible relationship” and heal from past hurts with one/each parent. Reunification can be successful as families progress through a carefully guided process.
